The unincorporated rural community of Woodbine, Maryland stretches across both Howard and Carroll counties as part of the Baltimore metropolitan area. It was named after the flowering plant that grows in nearby fields and along local riverbanks.
Woodbine straddles the Patapsco River, which serves as a divider between the two counties. A concrete bridge over the river was built in 1916; then in the 1920s came a large canning factory on the Carroll County side. Another small canning factory for tomatoes, corn and peas popped up in the Woodbine area as well, remains of which still exist. Approximately 8,000 people live in Woodbine today, among such local attractions as Breezy Hill Farm and Miller’s Mill.
